C-reactive protein (CRP) is an unspecific marker of inflammation. CRP determination by immunoassay is a well-established laboratory test for the diagnosis and monitoring of inflammatory processes. New applications of CRP determination are as a risk factor for cardiovascular disease, and for risk evaluation of patients with angina pectoris.
As well as blood culture to identify infectious agents, and elevated C-reactive protein (CRP), elevated Procalcitonin (PCT) is recognized as a biomarker for sepsis. PCT is a precursor of the hormone calcitonin; in the thyroid gland, procalcitonin is cleaved into calcitonin, katacalcin and an N-terminal fragment. PCT is not released into the blood stream of healthy individuals. Since it was reported that there is an elevated level of PCT in patients with an infection of bacterial origin, PCT is considered to be the main marker of disorders accompanied by inflammation and sepsis.
